Giveaway: Dancing Dollies 3D Canvas.

2010 September 13
by Maddie

Sometimes it sucks being the one who runs these giveaways. I never get to enter any of them myself! *pout* The latest is this adorable ‘Dancing Dollies’ canvas by Angie of Hamilton-based store, White and Bright. Only a month old, White and Bright creates sweet three dimensional canvases featuring little girls all frocked up and ready to do a little jig. The dolly bodies are printed onto the canvas and stretched onto a frame before the handmade heads with plaited hair and felt hats are added. These are truly unique pieces and would look stunning in a little girl’s room. (I just saw this comment from a customer on her Facebook wall: “…they light up the room and are the first things you notice.”) Available in sizes from small (30cm wide) to large (75cm wide). White and Bright has an Etsy and Felt store.

My fav dolly ever was called Heidi and she was SO loved by me as a child :-) She was sooo fancy – she said “Mumma Mumma” and cried until you put a dummy in her mouth (which was totally amazing way back then!!!) Though my Mum got sick of it so she took the box out of the back of it so that she couldn’t talk anymore!!! I gave her tattoos, haircuts etc – she looked hideous! Heidi finally got sent to the curb a few years ago after she totally fell apart and her head (which had fallen off many times) could not be reattached again (she was just too creepy looking!) I’m a fan on FB :-)

My favourite doll was a Shirley Temple look alike in a white dress embellished with red polka dots. She had curly hair–the kind I wanted.

When my baby brother was born, Dad bought home a doll from Singapore for me called ‘BabyTalk’. It was amazing! Her eyes blinked, and her mouth moved, she could suck a bottle, and had numerous sayings like ‘Mommy, I’m hungry’, ‘Mommy, turn me over, turn me over’ etc. I felt super special, as none of my friends had anything like her (this was in the mid-80′s, when talking dolls hadn’t made it to NZ yet!) but I was always afraid someone would break her, so she used to get put in the top of the wardrobe whenever people came to visit. I can now see where my little ratbag gets her problems with sharing from…wish I still had her, I keep an eye on eBay every now and then as it would be lovely to get one for Dita. Such nice memories :)

I’m also a fan of White and Bright on FB.

I used to have a my child doll which I lovingly called Jessica, she was permanently attached to me (even trips to the bathroom she would be dragged along so my mother has told me), to the point where my mum used to have to wait till I was well and truly in the land of nod and she would sneak in and unfold her out of my arms to give her a much needed wash…she was loved that much that when both her legs started to fall off my dear grandma made her a special ‘sleeping’ bag that she could live in :) she is still very loved to this day :) love all of their prints, would look fab in any little girls room!!!

I had a big doll that sang the alphabet. Drove my parents to distraction to the point where they confiscated the battery. So sad!!! I called her Tammy and took her everywhere! She finally went to dolly heaven after the nephews played a game of rubgy with her. grrr

My favorite dolly…. can it be an elephant? It was a BRIGHT pink fluffy elephant called “Elephante” like Alla-fan-tay. It still resides at mum and dads house, snorting dust in the back of my wardrobe there…

I think my fave dolly would have to be my ‘My Child’ – remember those?
They came with a locket and the fable went that whoever kissed it’s nose first was it’s mum… despite my brother whipping it from the box and kissing it before I had a chance, my ‘Mary’ was my number one dolly. Mum would make little outfits for my dolls, and outfits for me to wear that matched them!

Until now of course, my baby girl Jemima is often described by friends (and strangers for that matter) as much like a perfect “doll” — so she beats Mary hands-down on the fave list, who now comes in at a close second (cuddled by Jemima) :)

love the sight and face book page. any little girl would be delighted to hang one of the portraits above their bed.

My girls love American girl dolls and Polly Pockets and playing with naked Barbie dolls at the pool and in the tub.

As a child I loved and admired Pippi Longstocking and wished I were her………………..

“Birthday Doll” – i got her on my birthday and very imaginatively she was named “Birthday Doll”. She had long dark hair that I LOVED to “do”. Of course like all budding young hairdressers I cut her hair and she was never the same again. Mum was always a bit disappointed with her purchase that the doll’s hands were “open” with the fingers all sticking out making it very difficult to dress her in the new outfits that mum made for her. PLUS I had the obligatory Barbie AND Daisy (obviously I wasn’t particularly loyal). And… you guessed it – I cut their hair too! Short!! Oh dear.

Anyway, these Dancing Dollies 3D canvas pieces are gorgeous! Don’t you just love all the amazing NEW ideas that clever women keep coming out with. It’s all so enjoyable to look at and soooo inspiring!

I had a Daisy doll, and my brother said he would give her a hair cut. He ended up making her into a punk rocker – hair down the middle, none on the sides and dyed pink with food colouring. She is still alive and kicking at my parents house, perhaps my daughter will appreciate her in a few years!

My favourite doll growing up was a raggedy-anne doll dressed in a white pinny who I called Anastasia, for some reason I had wished that was my name instead of Aimee. Even when she lost her button eyes, she stayed with me each night. When I was 11 I even snuck her to form one ‘camp’ at National Park – in the bottom of my sleeping bag! She now sleeps in my glory box, waiting for my girls to discover her. x

My favourite dolly was Sandy. My Grandparents from the UK sent her over for my 4th birthday. I named her Sandy – the name of their dog. She walked and talked – she had little disc which inserted into a compartment on her back. I never went far without Sandy, she came with me to hospital when I had my tonsils out (she got a hospital cap and mask too) and my first day at school. I still have her, she lives in my daughters room now. Love the White and Bright dollies – and I am a Facebook fan :-)

My favourite doll was from my childhood and named after one of my little niece’s who I never got to see, Analeece. I had been given her for my first birthday and loved playing with her till 8 – 9. My nana would always make little outfits for her and my other dolls (all of which I still have). Once my daughter is a little bit older (just 3 months at the moment) I plan on giving her the doll and clothes.

These are gorgeous! And would look so perfect at our house as I have 3 daughters!
My all time favourite dolly would have to be a doll I had since childhood that is now part of my daughters’ stash. It’s hard and heavy with lovely brushable hair and even still has the nail polish on her fingers + toes from when I was young. She’s had her head fixed by the ‘Dolly Dr’ at the ‘Dolls Hospital’ too! Not sure if the shop that was the Dolly Hospital is around now though. :(
    Thanks for the fantastic giveaway!

My Uncle gave me a doll when I was about 3 years old and it was bigger than me until I was in school. I named her Suzie. She had a beautiful checkered dress and freckles and kind of reminded me of Raggedy Ann. Mum has photos of me carting that doll around everywhere and it looks so cute because she was so much bigger than me ;)

Ha! – would have to have be a tie between Jem (truly outrageous!) – and my dear old rag doll – One Eyed Sarah – no matter how many times her felt eyes got replaced, she always ended up back with one eye again… These are very cute – will have to go investigate White and Bright now, not good for the newly composed budget!

I had a walking talking doll – big and clumsy looking now that I look back! I still have it at my mum’s place. Also had a Skipper doll (Barbie’s younger sister). Still have it and all the outfits – some still in their original packaging. Am a fan of White and Bright. Love the canvas – waiting for the boys ones to be released.
