1000 Cranes. 1 Wish.

On February 22nd, Christchurch was hit with a destructive earthquake. Many lives were lost, buildings destroyed. The city centre is still not accessible because of the danger of falling debris. In the wake of this devastation, our city needs to be rebuilt from the ground up and our community needs your support. According to Japanese tradition, one thousand cranes are said to grant a wish and this thousand crane project was created to grant the wish that our city will stop shaking and we can begin to rebuild our city and our lives. We’d love your help and support by providing enough cranes to grant our wish.
If you’d like to make one (or more) to contribute to this project, you can send it to:
Update: We have one thousand cranes!!
I’ve also been asked to share the folding tutorials again so you know how to make them: Here is a diagram and here is a video.
You can purchase origami paper from shops like Omiyage (Canada) / Cherry Blossom (NZ) / Origami (Australia) / Paper Jade (U.S) but you can easily make it yourself – there are some instructions for making a square of paper here.
Once we have a thousand, we’ll string them all together and donate it to a local library who can keep this global wish safe and serve as a reminder of this devastating event which changed our city forever.

Hi! I have made 26 cranes for you, sending them today – hope they get there in time with others’ cranes in order to stop the shaking!
They are not made in the finest quality but I hope they help <3
Love from The Central Plateau.
Just popped over from The Wardrobe. I could ‘fly’ a small flock of cranes over from Oz if it’s not too late.
I hope I am not too late…posting ours tomorrow!

Yay!!
i’ve folded several but won’t have a chance to get to the post office until early next week!! hope i won’t be too late – otherwise if you have a different place they should be sent…
We need as many as we can get! Send them on over whenever you can. And thankyou so much, Claire!
How many do you have now? I think a public place to display would be great too!
My friend’s son in America is making some to send too!
I’ll be counting them up tomorrow when I meet with Kirsty at Sew Pretty and let you know. Thanks!
yesterday after library story hour a Japanese mother, in our group was quietly soliciting donations for the people of Japan and offering up origami cranes.
So we gave our donation and picked some adorable colorful cranes including of course some Hello Kitty designs.
For some odd reason we ended up with 16 cranes, so from North Carolina they will be sent. Hope you all know that we are all hopeful that Christchurch will re-build into the beautiful city it once was…..
Once a kiwi, always a kiwi

I’ll be sending you some from London! xx
Thanks Vixie!
We are folding like crazy over here. I will send you my cranes next week. Love the idea!
A big hug from sunny Barcelona.
Hi there I stumbled upon your webpage by mistake when i searched AOL for this matter, I need to tell you your page is really very helpful I also really like the design, its amazing!
Love this. I know you had initially thought of a school but I wondered when things are back up in the city if the central library or one of the others could be a good place too – just because then anyone can see it and participate with it. Will get some cranes to you soon
Do you think the Central Library will be up and running? That area seemed pretty badly hit. If it is, that would make a fantastic place to display the thousand cranes. Let’s hope that by the time we’ve collected a thousand, it is back up and running
We have been making paper cranes… we just need to pop them into an envelope and send them off to you…
thankyou so much x
